This write-up is about starting an engineer. This write-up doesn't contain the finer details of being an engineer just what you need to know when you get started.
Engineers are not very powerful on the lower levels but become very capable, as they get to the higher levels. The profession provides you with a large array of "Toys" that you can place down, which add to the overall damage you do on the battle field. Combining all these "Toys" will allow you to inflict more damage than any other profession. The damage might not be focused but it plays a vital role in any scenario.

The Skills:
You will need to know the Lieutenant and Lieutenant Commander skills you will have to invest into and those to avoid for now. This isn't cut into stone and you can at higher ranks decide on a different path. Therefore these are the key skills in your engineer build.

Simple Tactics:
Talk to the fleet members about where to place your skills and about how to play your engineer. The one concept to keep in mind: you can switch your kits while you are not under threat by double clicking them in your inventory. You can keep your inventory open on the side and just switch your kits as you go along. You can therefore build a bunker, then switch to mines and lay your mines, and then start the battle. This method of switching kits is referred to as "Combat Kit Switching" getting good at it is vital and allows you to build safe spots to fight from.
